As a cement mixer is a vital part of many building jobs, it is important that you know how to choose a cement mixer which will suit the job you are planning! Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect style of cement mixer for your needs.

Most cement mixers are made up of four main parts:

  • A motor run by either petrol or electricity
  • A rotating tank or drum
  • A crank wheel to allow the drum to be moved into different positions
  • A solid chassis which is often mounted on wheels

The mixer you choose will be dependent on the volume of concrete you need to create, the power source you plan to use and some other criteria such as a preference for metal or plastic parts.

Volume

Sometimes, the volume is talking about the volume of the tank and other times it refers to the mixing volume. Be sure to double check which type of volume it is talking about! It is worth bearing in mind that overfilling your mixer can cause the mixutre to stick to the walls of the drum.  If you have too small a drum for the job, you’ll find yourself refilling it all the time.

Number of bags of cement powder

The standard bag of cement powder is a 35kg bag. You will need to think about how many bags you will need for each batch of concrete you are mixing. On the whole, cement mixers with a mixing volume of 110 litres will take around half a bag of cement powder per mix.

Electric Cement Mixers

There are several benefits to owning an electric cement mixer compared to a petrol fuelled mixer. It is cheaper and requires a lot less maintenance for a start! You simply need a plug socket to get going. The start up is always instant no matter what the outside temperatiure is and they are lighter to move around.  You can see our great range of electric cement mixers on our shop pages.

Petrol Cement Mixers

There are some cases when a petrol cement mixer is actually the better choice for your job.  They are able to be used in virtually any circumstance – no need to worry about obtaining an electrical source to run from! They are also more powerful than electric mixers, producing batches at greater volumes than electrical mixers.  The petrol models are often equipped with inflatable tyres which are easier to manoeuver than others.

We hope you have found this information useful and that you know a little more about how to choose a cement mixer for the next building project you work on!

A cement mixer is actually the name we give to concrete mixers – they are machines used to mix up the various parts which create concrete.  There are different types of cement mixers on the market, so knowing which type is right for you can be tricky if you are unsure! Here is a brief guide to the different types of mixer available to you:

Batch Mixers

These are commonly used for mixing concrete. The concrete mix obtained by this mixer is collected a batch at a time, hence it is called a batch mixer! These can come as drum type or pan type mixers, where as the name may suggest, the concrete ingredients are either mixed in a drum or a pan.  The typical mixer you see being used in the UK is a drum mixer, with the revolving drum doing all the hard work of mixing. This is one of the most popular types of cement mixers. All of our electric cement mixers are batch mixers.

Tilting or Non-Tilting Drum Mixers

There are different times when you may want a tilting mixer compared to a non tilting mixer.  As the name suggests, the tilting mixer discharges the concrete by tilting the drum downwards. This is great for large scale projects where a lot of concrete will be required.  Non tilting mixers are not able to tilt, and the drum rotates slightly differently. The drum can be opened at two ends and has the materials pured through one end and collected through the other. This style is more suited to smaller projects.
